The Painful Repetitive Strain Injury .
Those that suffer from arthritis can expect some aching and discomfort, but for those who are in constant, debilitating pain, it could be something more serious. If your wrist aches so badly that you can't carry out daily functions, it could be a case of tendonitis.
Tendonitis is the inflammation of a fluid-filled sheath that surrounds tendons in the hands and wrists. It is a common form of repetitive strain injury, also known as RSI.
This can affect those with jobs that require a person to do repetitive tasks, such as typing or work with hand tools.
Those affected can see swelling and may feel a "clunk" or "click" when one or more tendons that pass through the wrist become irritated. Without help, the pain can spread up the arm. Other symptoms are also weakness, numbness and tingling. If left unchecked, this can eventually lead to permanent disability.
For typists, try to relax your fingers while using the keys. Check yourself to see that you're not cramping-up your fingers. Also be aware of your back posture. Take breaks more often, and stretch your hands and wrists. Walk around and swing your arms. After long periods of work, rest your hands and wrists and apply ice. A gentle massage to ease the pain should also help.
For more serious cases, physiotherapy can help, and also a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as a steroid injection, or as a last resort, surgery.
Necessary changes to your working routine are required if you hope to avoid tendonitis.
